McDonald’s Announces Arch IQ – AI Ordering, Version 2.0

Meet Archy. He’ll be your AI robot drive-thru ordering wiz today. Well, not today, but soon. McDonald’s is launching version 2.0 of its AI-based ordering system later this year. They insist that this one works – unlike version 1.0…

To really understand how Archy works, you have to view the detailed system demo video McD’s has thoughtfully provided via its ‘X’ channel. But the screen grab above gives you an idea of what your ordering experience, ‘chatting’ with Archy, will be like…

Big improvement promised

… Is what McD’s is promising fans when its new, improved, friendlier more-human-like Arch IQ AI-based ordering system premieres soon at a McD’s near you. The burger behemoth insists it’s got the concept right this time.

Who can forget the mess that ensued when McDonald’s rolled out version 1.0 of its long-promised Ai-robot drive-thru ordering system? It shut down the fledgling system two years ago this month, just a few weeks after it débuted.

The initial version of McD’s Automated Ordering Technology (AOT) had trouble with special requests such as “Hold the onions!” And it tripped up when asked to amend an order. Among other annoying glitches.

But McD’s says its new AI ordering system, rebuilt from the ground up, is the real deal…

A show highlight

The Arch AI announcement was a highlight of the recent 2026 annual McD’s Worldwide meeting. The chain unveiled it’s latest business strategy update, called McDonald’s > Next.

The official news release begings with what you might call a position statement: “Ray Kroc built this company on a simple yet powerful promise: great tasting food, served with a smile, at a good value. Take care of the customer and the rest looks after itself.”

Arch IQ is just one facet of that commitment. But it may be harder for the burger behemoth to come through on its promise than the release makes it sound… Especially the ‘good value’ part. Because so many of the factors contributing to food price and other cost increases are beyond McD’s control.

What’s in store?

AI will be at the forefront of the new business approach, which promises to put ‘customer expect-ations’ first. Even if it provides fewer opportunities for ‘guests’ to experience that human smile Ray Kroc believed was so important.

“In a world where every restaurant is a swipe away, there is no such thing as second place,” the re-lease proclaims. “We can’t ask our customers to choose. Hospitality or speed. Great taste or conven-ience. Value or quality. They want what Ray called the total of everything. They won’t trade one for another because they don’t have to.”

My take

The McDonald’s news release concludes on a heroic note: “Are we our customer’s first choice? For most, it’s an unequivocal, ‘Yes’, every time. For some, ‘Not yet’. And ‘Not yet’ is something we refuse to live with….”

The McDonald’s > Next message is long on enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. But short on details ex-plaining how they intend to keep their high-flung promises. The imminent début of Arch AI will be our first palpable indication…
