Why Are MAHA Types Rocking The ‘Sauerkraut Diet’?

The Sauerkraut Diet is the creation of a high-level health and wellness consultant, and has been espoused by a significant cadre of Trump Administration officials. Maybe because Health Mandarin RFK Jr. has championed it, himself…

RFK Jr. - © 2024 abc.net.auDHHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy (pictured, left) has been following the Sauerkraut Diet for over a year, al-ready. And a growing number of his colleagues have jumped on the bandwagon… Has also become a fav-ourite with Vice President J.D. Vance, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

RFK Jr.’s wife, Cheryl Hines, told the The Katie Miller Podcast, in 2025, her husband will cook a steak and eat sauerkraut at 6:30 in the morning. “He’s so dedicated to this diet that he’s eating that he will bring his own sauerkraut [out to dinner].”

What is it?

The Sauerkraut Diet is a simple concept with complex ‘operational’ details. Creator Dr. Sean O’Mara (photo, top of page) calls it the Living In Peak Diet. But it’s more than just an eating regime.

“This isn’t about symptom management – it’s about transformation,” the website says. “Dr. O’Mara helps leaders, innovators, and visionaries biologically re-engineer themselves using natural, proven strategies more powerful than medication. This is optimization at the highest level: expanding clarity, stamina, and presence so you can influence longer, lead further, and achieve more.

They do that largely by monitoring a subject’s health closely, and making adjustments as needed in any of the dozens of diet and medication variables involved. The dietary core of the system is lean, grass-fed meat and fermented foods. The most familiar of which, to most American dieters, is – sauerkraut.

The ‘program’

Many of the core tenets of the Sauerkraut Diet sound like good old common sense, to me:

    • Eliminate ultra-processed foods and carbohydrates.
    • Eat only grass-fed meat and seafood. Pair them with fermented foods like sauerkraut or other fermented vegetables.
    • Practice regular, extended fasting.
    • Do brief, high-intensity training, such as sprints, push-ups, pull-ups, and squats.
    • Use strategic hermetic stress, like exposure to cold, heat, and fasting.
    • Restore the gut microbiome by eating fermented foods and taking probiotic supplements.
    • Prioritize sleep and circadian alignment.

O’Mara adds, folks can follow he program even when on a plant-based diet.

My take

Dr. O’Mara bills himself, officially, as ‘an executive biology consultant’. He specializes in advising and treating top executives – particularly ‘leaders, influencers and visionaries’. His program seeks to opt-imize their entire ‘presence’ including:

    • Energy that does not fade.
    • Clarity that cannot be shaken.
    • Presence that commands every room.
    • Influence that compounds with time.
    • Legacy that outlives the years.

That’s a tall order, by anyone’s standards. And I have my doubts that he can come through convinc-ingly on all his promises. I’m curious to see how his process produces ‘commanding presence’. And I’m even even more curious to see how he justifies his claims about making subjects more influential and enhancing their legacies!

Nevertheless… I’ll default, in closing, to my comment about the commonsensical nature of many of the Sauerkraut Diet’s core tenets. It wouldn’t hurt anybody to follow them (minus the fasting and ‘stressing’), as everyday ‘standard operating procedure’…
