Talk about getting out the youth vote! Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently pledged online that, if elected Novermber 5, he’ll, “make McDonald’s ice cream machines work great again!” Can he – and only he – really do THAT?
Trump reposted a badly Photoshopped meme showing President Joe Biden wearing a MAGA hat…
Trump is still making hay at his rallies and media appearances over his ‘working at McDonald’s’ stunt last week. It was a poke at Democtratic party candidate Kamala Harris, who has mentioned during her campaign that she worked McD’s during her college years. Like millions of other middle class American kids have over the years…
A bold promise
But he went a step further Monday night on his Truth Social account, pledging to make the chain’s ice cream machines ‘work great again’. ‘Out of Service’ ice cream machines have long been a bane of McD’s fans’ existence.
“WHEN I’M PRESIDENT THE MCDONALD’S ICE CREAM MACHINES WILL WORK GREAT AGAIN!” Trump declared. The post also featured a badly Photoshopped image of a smiling President Joe Biden wearing a MAGA hat and holding a large ice cream cone.
Reckless boasting?
Generally speaking the former president was panned for his fry-making performance. But a former McD’s employee told The Independent, Trump actually did a pretty good job, considering it was his first crack at the task.
Mike Bedigan reported: “While many online were quick to remark about the former president’s breaches of health and safety protocol, such as no hair net or visible hand-washing, as a former teenage fry-cook I have to be honest: He… didn’t actually do a bad job.”
Instant ridicule
The post received more than 150,000 likes on X within an hour. But the mood was sarcastic rather than supportive…
“Bro, you already had my vote,” one commenter said. “But now I’m gonna take a few people with me to vote just because of this post.” Yah. Right. To vote for Harris?
“Kamala is literally gonna start shaking in fear if she reads this,” another predicted. Shaking with laughter, more likely.
And… Not to miss any opportunity to support the Trump campaign, no matter how tiny, Donald Trump Jr. even chimed in, saying his dad knew the McDonald’s menu better than Harris did.
McDonald’s ‘clarifies’
But it’s also worth noting that McDonald’s was quick to clarify its own position on the stunt: “Though we are not a political brand, we’ve been proud to hear former President Trump’s love for McDonald’s and Vice President Harris’s fond memories working under the Arches,” the company said in a message to employees.
Perhaps to make sure it stayed out of a potential political minefield, the chain also went out of it’s way to confirm that it can neither confirm nor deny that Harris actually did work at the Arches ‘back in the day’: “[W]e and our franchisees don’t have records for all positions dating back to the early ’80s…”
My take
First, I must go on record as stating I, for one, don’t believe that Trump, who has characterized him-self as a ‘chosen one’, could make the machines work any better than they currently do.
Investigations some time ago, by the company that services the soft-serve dispensers, concluded the machines often go down due to employee neglect. And when they do, an ‘approved’ service tech must be summoned at $300 an hour to fix them.
Off on another tangent… I suspect that Trump used the McD’s appearance to live a secret, long-time dream: To actually work at McDonald’s. It’s well known he’s a big fan of the chain.
Trump once even fed All-American college football players Fast Food, featuring a wide variety of McMenu items, at a traditional White House Luncheon. When kitchen and housekeeping staff at the executive mansion were on strike.
*Sheesh*…
