Sunday Musings: Did Your Taste Buds Survive COVID?

A new study has revealed that many of us suffered complete or partial loss of our sense of taste, as a result of COVID. The crucial point is: did it come back? A majority of those affected say yes – to some degree or another. But…

I was one of the many COVID victims whose sense of taste was impaired by the infection. But I was lucky. My senses of taste and smell both returned to full function. There are others, however, whose sense of taste may have been permanently impaired…

A significant number of COVID sufferers reported that their senses of taste and smell were impaired. Or completely wiped out by the infection. There’s a clinical name for the affliction: Angeusia. But the causes are poorly understood. Put that together with a loss of your sense of smell (Anosmia) and you get a complex that could put you off food altogether.

Scientists now say the reason for the loss of sensation was direct damage to the taste buds. Among those not permanently affected, it took up to a year for their sense of taste to return. A significant number of sufferers report their sense of taste is still not back to what it once was. And it may never be.

My take

The temporary or permanent loss of taste and/or smell is no small issue. It impacts a huge range of everyday activities and can reduce your well-being both physically and emotionally. If you can’t taste your food, you might lose interest in eating it. And loss of the pleasure you once experienced from the taste of food could be seriously depressing. It would be for me!

My questions to you…

Did you experience loss of your sense of taste during the COVID era?

If so…

Did you experience permanent damage?

If so…

Has that loss resulted in physical issues stemming from a loss of interest in food?

Has that loss resulted in emotional upset?

Or has your sense of taste come back?

If so…

Has it recovered all the way to what it was pre-COVID?

Muse on that…
