They call it the Pregnancy Sub. Not because you’ll get preggers if you eat it, or that it’s about to deliver you a baby sub. And you don’t have to be pregnant to love it. Curiously, its origin remains clouded in the mists of Fast Food legend…
It’s all over the social media and folks are having a riotous grand time with the whole idea. Food Writer Baily Fink loves Jersey Mike’s to begin with. And she’s been a big fan of many previous Mike’s menu hacks. But she opines as this latest new viral Jersey Mike’s order might be the quirkiest one yet.
Twist on a classic
Fink advises that the Pregnancy Sub (PS) is essentially Jersey Mike’s No. 1 BLT. It’s actually a pretty standard BLT, featuring: crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. But it is ‘made Mike’s Way‘(with lettuce, tomato, onion, olive oil, red wine vine-gar, salt, and oregano) with additional pickles, banana peppers, and chopped pepper relish and served on Rosemary Parmesan bread.
(Get an eyeful, left. BTW: That’s not Baily Fink; it’s a food vlogger who goes by the handle ‘themansourfamily’ on TikTok…)
Uncertain origins
Like many viral social media phenomena, the PS seems to have just ‘shown’ up. Nowhere one minute and everywhere the next. Nobody seems to know who originated the thing or why. Fink notes, “It’s hard to pinpoint where this trending order started, but, TikTok is filled with dozens and dozens of videos of people (pregnant and not) trying the sub.”
My ‘diagnosis’ is that the PS is nothing short of a classic ‘viral’ occurrence. The best, most-enduring online legends all have misty origins. And months or years later, folks find themselves wondering, “What happened to the…”
Baily’s review
As a self-confessed Jersey Mike’s aficionado, Fink offers her personal take on the OS, tempered by her long association with JM’s menu and her love of BLTs…
“The tangy, pickled ingredients really shine in an otherwise basic sandwich, so it hits all the savory, acidic taste buds just right. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic sub; however, as someone who can eat deli meat, I likely wouldn’t choose to spend my money on a sub with just bacon when I could make it at home—or get my loaded Club Sub for just a few bucks more.”
But…
“Maybe I am just stubborn or maybe my No. 8 Club Sub on Rosemary Parmesan bread made Mike’s Way with added pickles, jalapeño peppers, banana peppers, and chopped pepper relish really is the best thing on the Jersey Mike’s menu. Who’s to say?”
My take
Who’s to say? SHE’s to say, obviously. And there’s no reason for her reticence. It’s her review. And she’s a legit Jersey Mike’s ‘expert’.
My own analysis – admittedly crippled by my geographical inability to try the PS myself – is that the PS is definitely a go-to for folks who like bacon and LOVE hot peppers.
As for Baily’s assertion that you could make it at home… I fear it would cost a small fortune and hours of time searching to gather all the ingredients needed to make it ‘Mike’s Way’…
