Fast Food Week: Quick Service Resto And Snacks News…

Fast Food and Snack vendors are getting into the Hallowe’en run-up big time, now that Canadian Thanksgiving is over. Popeye’s, Papa John’s and Lays are all getting into the act with special-product announcements. And there’s action on the Potato Chip front from Lays and KFC…

Popeye’s spices things up with Voodoo Tenders

What would Chicken purveyors do if they didn’t have Fingers / Tenders / Strips to play with when creating new limited-time specials? What better ‘blank canvas’ on which to paint the latest sauce and garnish picture? Now, Popeye’s is floating what it calls Voodoo Tenders – regular crispy Tenders smothered in what they call Voodoo Sauce. That’s a sweet / spicy glaze with definite overtones of Garlic and a sprinkling of chopped Chives. Get ’em in box orders of three or five Tenders with a Popeye’s signature Biscuit and one side while they last.

Pizza Hut warms you up with Sriracha Wings…

The Hut is unveiling its new Smoky Sriracha Wings at all its U.S. locations that offer Wings. They’re basically the Hut’s standard Wings (either Traditional or Boneless) doused in a new hot and sour Red Pepper Sauce heavy on the Garlic and Vinegar. Oddly – although it’s called Sriracha – the Sauce is said to be made from Red Jalapeños. But that’s hot enough for me!

… Celebrates 15 years of Baja Blast

The Bell is also celebrating the 15th anniversary of offering Mountain Dew’s Baja Blast on its menu with what it calls an ‘ultra-limited-edition Baja Blast Birthday Freeze’. It’s the Bell’s regular Blast with ‘confetti’ candy sprinkles stirred in. Get it for just ma buck during ‘happy hour’ – 2 to 5 p.m. at most Bell locations. And get it fast: the chain hasn’t said exactly how ultra-limited this special is!

Papa John’s gets goulish for Hallowe’en

Papa John’s is bringing back its popular Jack-O-Lantern Pizza doe the remainder of this month. It’s a regular Thin Crust Cheese Pie with a Pepperoni Border and Smile, and Pepperoni and Olive eyes. It’s not sliced, so that the design will hand together during boxing and delivery. Just (US)$11 at participating locations.

KFC Crusts Chicken Tenders with Crushed Lays

KFC and Lays are partnering to bring BBQ flavoured Chips-crusted Chicken Tenders to participating Canadian locations from now until November 10 (or while supplies last). I discovered, on a tour of a Potato Chip plant a bunch of years ago, that chips which are crushed or broken during manufacturing are separated from the ‘good’ ones before they’re bagged and packed in cases. Now, Lays has someone to sell the bits and pieces to, rather than just throwing them out – for a limited time, that is.

Just in time for winter: Tomato Soup Lays…

Actually, they’re Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup flavoured Lays Potato Chips – just the thing to slake the craving we all get for that signature lunchtime combo of our youth when the weather starts getting cold. We’re told Lays has issues separate Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup flavoured Chips in the past, but this is the first time they’ve put them together. What took them so long? You can grab a bag of nostalgia starting this Monday, October 21, while supplies last.

… And the ultimate Hallowe’en Swag bag?

Lays is selling what may be the ultimate Hallowe’en Swag Bag this season. It’s like a regular re-usable ‘Green’ grocery bag, but features a highly-reflective spooky design for safety after dark, a velcro re-sealing strip to prevent spillage, and a reinforced bottom. What’s better, it comes filled with Lays’ single-serving sized packs of Lays and Doritos snacks. Prices start at about (US)$14.50 and range on up to about $20 depending on the selection of snacks you want. Available at Amazon for a very limited time…

And that’s the skinny…

… On what’s going to be making some of us a little fatter through the remainder of this fall… See you back here in 7 for another edition of Fast Food Week!
