Whats the first thing you think of when you contemplate dessert after a classic Holiday Feast? For me – and many of you, I suspect – it’s pie. But what kind of pie lights your Yule Log? I have more than one favourite!
Dessert Pies are really timeless. Both the recipes and the meals around the year where they are awaited as sweet piéces de rèsistance.
I’ve put together a selection of Festive Feast-appropriate pies to help get your dessert glands working…
Timeless Holiday Dessert Pies for all…
Apple Pie
Southern Living states the obvious… “Apple pie is a fall tradition. This old-fashioned recipe will have everyone reminiscing on the good ole’ days at the table.”
And it’s a great way to make fresh, creative use of old, reliable – maybe overused – Pumpkin Pie Spice! Hint: Go a little heavier on the Cloves, Ginger and Nutmeg – to taste.
Pumpkin Pie
I have my own classic Pumpkin recipe handed down from my Mom’s Mom. Top with Whipped Cream, Ice Cream or rich, thick Greek Yogurt (sweetened with a little Maple Syrup!)
Pecan Pie
Southerners as well as devotées of the creation will tell you there’s nothing else quite like Pecan Pie for the Holidays. But I maintain it’s equal, though different in many ways, to the foregoing Apple and Pumpkin preparations. All depends on where you live, and how sweet your sweet tooth is!
Egg Custard Pie
Here’s another regional delicacy that suffer short shrift in most homes. Egg Custard Pie is a classic in the same family as Crème Caramel, Caramel Flan and even international custard classics such as Sabayon. Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup, or the classic brown sugar glaze.
Sweet Potato Pie
This 5-Star version goes back almost as far as the First Thanksgiving. And, contrary to what some folks believe, it’s equally traditional as a main course side as it is a dessert pie.
And finally…
Possum Pie
No Possums are harmed in the preparation of this sumptuous Arkansas classic… Instead, it’s composed of Toasted Pecans, Dutch Cocoa, Cream Cheese and Whipped Cream. This version also boats a festive crust enhanced with crushed Pecans!
