Tim Horton’s Wants You! In Battle Of The Doughnuts…

I may just be viewing a familiar scene differently. But it seems to me that Tim Horton’s is holding more contests than ever before. Now, it’s The Battle of the Donuts, designed to tell Tim what you want in new flavours…

Culinary Innovation for Tim Hortons, making your
Battle of the Doughnuts contest winner!

Apparently, June 6 now stands for not one but two important national observances: D-Day and National Doughnut Day. We’ve examined the Historic connection between the doughnut and the gallant fighting men on the front lines previously in this space…

Call to arms

The annual BOTD celebrates National Doughnut Day.

The Second World War started on June 6, 1939, and ran for 6 years. This year, the BOTD runs for 6 days (for submission of entries, anyway), through July 4.

The official news release advises Canadians can submit their doughnut idea in the Battle of the Donuts contest for a chance to win $10,000 and a trip for two to the Tim Hortons Test Kitchen in Toronto to make their winning doughnut with Chef Tallis Voakes, Horton’s Director of Culinary Innovation. All Canadians may later have the chance see the winning doughnut on the menu at Tim Horton’s restaurants!

My late, great stead, Graeme, would been all over this one! His ‘second careetr in retirement was ‘chef-detective’, in which role he travelled far and wide to explore the culinary mysteries and marvels of his homeland. The Tim’s Test Kitchen would have been to him as the treasure caves of Monte Cristo were to Edmond Dantes…

Nevertheless…

“We can’t wait to see how creative Canadians get with their donut ideas,” Voakes enthuses. “From bold new flavours to playful twists on Tims classics, this contest is about big imagination, and just maybe, the next iconic Tims doughnut.”

Afficionados can submit their ideas with each entry judged on the following criteria:

  • Creativity: is the donut unique?
  • Popularity: is the donut likely to be a crowd-pleaser?
  • Feasibility: can the idea reasonably be turned into a Tim Hortons donut?

A Tim Hortons panel of experts will conduct several rounds of reviews until three donut ideas remain. Then it’s up to Canadians across the country to vote for the winner. The fan voting phase begins in the fall.

Dedicated website…

Tim’s has set up a special website dedicated to the contest. Visit: timshop.ca/battleofthedonuts for the official contest rules. Limit of 1 submission per person…

My take

I love food-based contests which encourage fan participation! And any contest that involves doughnuts has my undivided attention….

A doughnut contest that dangles before me the chance to visit Tim’s test kitchen has extra-special appeal… Maybe I’ll see you there!
