I most definitely would not. It would – I predict – melt into pools of runny milk solids and whey. That aside… Why would anyone put cream cheese on a pizza when they could have Mozzarella, Ricotta or Feta?

This post is the result of an AllRecipes post by contributor Victoria Solis, who seems to be one of those food bloggers who promotes things because ‘that’s the way we did it back home’…
The premise
Solis heads her missive: You Need To Try This Controversial Pizza Topping On Your Next Order. I, for one, do not. Furthermore, I am suspicious of, not to mention a bit offended by people who think they know better than I do what I’ll like.
That said… What is she proposing?
The recipe she bases her post on is called Jalapeño Popper Pizza. It consists of crispy bacon crumbles, sautéed onions and a passle of spices. Which is a good thing, because cream cheese would, I suspect, taste pretty blah on a pizza by itself.
“Stir cream cheese and sour cream,” Really? “…into the onion mixture until smooth and spreadable, then layer the mixture evenly over the pizza dough. Top with mozzarella and cheddar cheese,” Ah HA! chortles Maggie. “Arrange your bacon and jalapeño pepper rings over the cheese layer.” Garnish with parsley and bake as you would any other scratch pizza.
Objective analysis
This is not a cream cheese pizza. It’s not even a cream cheese and sour cream pizza. It’s a mozz and cheddar pizza with jalapeños – and only token representation by CC and SC. If you want to substitute a white sauce for the traditional tomato base, there are accepted, more flavourful, and less problematic options.
The photo at the top of the page seems to put the lie to my prediction that the CC would break down. I have nothing more to say about that.
I can’t vouch for the flavour. But I have to observe that the CC ans SC would probably be totally submerged by the bacon, onions and jalapeños.
My take
Solis tells us she found this ‘recipe’ among a coterie of ‘typically Colorado’ pizzas. And she owns up to being a Colorado native daughter.
She further discloses that her go-to order is, “…always a pepperoni pizza with jalapeños and dollops of cream cheese on top.”
Reader feedback…
One commenter said, “I’m all for weird pizza toppings but just use ricotta, please.”
Another suggested, “A good trick [would be] don’t [do this] because that is awful.”
My questions to you:
Would you put Cream Cheese on a pizza?
If yes… Why?
If not… What are YOUR reasons not to?
… Muse on that
