We recently reported that the US Army harbour receiving aid supplies off the shore of Gaza was operational. But now we hear the floating pier has been damaged by rough seas, and is closed for repairs. While millions of Gazans are still starving…
Two small ships assisting operations at the floating pier off North Gaza
slipped their moorings and ran agrund during the recent storm.
The floating pier was offered by the US to help move humanitarian relief supplies – mainly desperately needed food – into Gaza. The unusual method of landing supplies was instituted to bypass the Israeli army’s closure of all land routes into the war-torn territory.
Stormy weather
Apparently, the narrow part of the structure leading to the shore broke apart in high seas during a storm. Two small boats associated with the pier operations also broke their moorings and ran aground during the storm.
The pier itself has been taken to a facility in Israel for rebuilding. Repairs will probably take more than a week.
Meanwhile, 2.3 million Gazans face what the UN’s Wold Food Program has labelled a famine catastrophe.
