So… What do you think would happen if you drank only fizzy pop drinks for 16 years; no plain water, no other liquids? Doctors in the principality of Monaco, just next door to The Riviera, in southern France, say they’ve found someone who fits the profile, and she’s got problems…
Apparently, a 31-year-old local woman in Monaco has developed a severe potassium deficiency and something called QT syndrome, which causes an erratic heart beat. The ‘victim’ was brought in to hospital after she fainted going about her usual daily business. She had no family history of heart disease nor did she report any previous problems. But she did admit to a two-litre-a-day Cola habit, that she’s kept up for the past 16 years.
Dr. Naima Zarqane, of Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco, told reporters, “”One of the take-home messages is that cardiologists need to be aware of the connection between cola consumption and potassium loss, and should ask patients … about beverage habits.”
The Dr. didn’t say how much cola a day, or for how long, it takes to get QT syndrome, but she cites a well-known link between caffein and low potassium.
More research is in the works. We’ll bring you an update when one is available…
