If a beekeepers’ co-op in Iowa can donate 10,000 bottles of honey to food banks across the US, why can’t Supermarket Cartel billionaires step up and help fight malnutrition and starvation among so-ciety’s most vulnerable families?

This past week, we told you how a honey producers’ co-op based in grassroots Sioux City Iowa don-ated 10,000 bottles of its Number 1 Clover Honey to food banks and neighbourhood food pantry charities across the US…
An example to us all…
That donation will help 10,000 families add much-needed healthy Calories, vitamins and minerals to their diets.
But that’s still just a drop in the bucket compared to the support food relief organizations need to meet the skyrocketing demand for their services – as more families at the bottom of the income ladder fall below the poverty line, and wages fall farther and farther behind rising prices.
Some hope?
The Canadian government is launching a wide-ranging investigation into the whole national food chain, with special emphasis on non-competitive activity, deceptive marketing and pricing practices, and price fixing.
But it’s just an investigation, with no guarantee that appropriate remedial action will be taken. And the results of the probe may be a couple of years down the road.
Meanwhile…
The food affordability crisis continues to worsen. Among other indications, 4 regional public health authorities in the Province of Ontario recently revealed that the number of cases of malnutrition being reported to them is soaring. Folks at the bottom of the social pyramid simply can’t afford enough decent food to stay healthy. And the cost to meet their health care needs is also soaring.The system can no0 longer cope with the results of persistent high food prices.
My take
Obviously, real, effective action is needed now to head off an all-out disaster, in which families are literally starving. I’ve said it before, and I relish the change to say it again…
McLean’s magazine estimates the net worth of Loblaw’s tycoon Galen Weston at at least $18 billion. What are you planning to do with all that money, Mr. Weston? You can’t take it with you.
So why not put yourself on the moral and ethical level of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, and give away $2 – or $3 or $5 – billion of your hoard to the Food Banks? To help keep Canadians from suffering malnutrition, and all the conditions and diseases that proceed from that previously unthinkable state…
