Sunday Musings: KFC Thanks Good Samaritan

Last week, Joann Oliver of Jackson, Georgia found a little bonus in the bag with her lunchtime KFC Chicken Sandwich – $543.10 in cash. She took it straight to the police. KFC thanked the Good Samaritan, and you can, too…

The Good Samaritan

The story is as old as the Biblical tale of the Good Samaritan. And this particular version of it has happened before. But the resulting aftermath is a little different than usual.

Joann Oliver of Jackson, Georgia was shocked to discover what turned out to be the shift bank deposit from her local KFC in her lunch bag. She took it straight to the Jackson Police.

Now… She could have used the money. Her husband is currently battling cancer with medical bills already totalling more than $2 million.

And, and she admits that idea of keeping the windfall did briefly cross her mind. But she was raised to do the right thing.

“If you don’t do the right thing it’s gonna come back on you. I mean It wasn’t mine. I didn’t need to keep it. I’ll get mine in the future,” she later told WSB-TV.

“Not only did Mrs. Oliver do the right thing but she saved the managers (sic) job,” Jackson Police posted on its Facebook page. “Mrs. Oliver thank you for reminding us that we have amazing Citizens in Jackson and its people like you that make us great!”

Then, out of the blue…

Shortly after the event, KFC awarded Joann some free food and the thanks of a grateful manager.

But that’s not where it ended. Jennifer Renee Edwards of Covington, GA, decided Mrs. Oliver should get her just reward sooner rather than later. And set up a Go Fund Me campaign in her name to help cover her husband’s medical expenses. Fittingly, the initial donation (anonymous) was $5,430. – from KFC.

As of this writing, the donation total had reached $6,770. The goal is $1 million. We’ll see where this goes…

Meanwhile…

Your mission – should you decide to accept it – is to decide, truthfully whether you would have scuttled away with the cash or ‘done the right thing’.

… Muse on that!
