Okay. Maybe the headline is a little harsh. But is there anyone out there who uses Avocados who doesn’t know how to remove the pit and scoop out the meat? Somebody at Calavo Growers Inc. thinks so. And, apparently, somebody at Sobey’s supermarkets agrees. What do you think?
In a cooler part of the world, where Avocados generally go for 3/$5, do we really need
pre-pitted and peeled ones at $4 apiece? Might depend on how uncoordinated
you are, and how much you want an avocado…
Calavo Growers Inc. is a huge California food processing and packing company. Avocados are their primary focus. They’ve been shipping Avocados since 1923. They know their Avocados. But what’s the rationale for marketing pre-pitted and peeled Avocado halves?
Facebooker Christine Kizik, whose off-the-shelf photo appears above, wondered, too. And Sobey’s got back to her with a response to her Facebook post:
Thanks for sharing this with us Christine. This product was developed for people who might be new to using avocados and for a little more convenience. It eliminates the guess work when it comes to ripeness and any challenges if you are not familiar with peeling and seeding a fresh avocado. The packaging is there to keep the fresh wholesome appearance and quality of the avocado without it browning prior to consumption.
Okay. We get it. This is just a logical (?) extension of the recent supermarket trend to offering shoppers pre-prepped produce ‘for their convenience’. Of course, the price doubles or triples if you choose the pre-prepped stuff over the basic item, but that’s the price of convenience.
I recommend you learn how to pit and peel an avocado yourself. Just search for ‘How to peel an avcocado’ at YouTube. Doing it yourself takes under a minute and you can save a lot of money!
