So much great McStuff goes by on Fast Food Week – from countries other than the US or Canada… And I make a plaintive cry to give North Americans a chance to try it. Finally, it seems someone at McD’s Canada has become a faithful FFB reader!
I was immediately curious when I read that Canada is getting a special McMenu of selected items from around the world. I’ve been bugging them to do this for years!
A ‘taster’ or a tease?
‘Taster’ menus are all the rage at top-tier restos, these days. Especially those offering extreme cui-sines many folks won’t be familiar with. And that’s kind of that McD’s is doing with its International Menu Heist. Except ‘tasters’, offer a full slate of items, in minis-size on a single platter; just a tantal-izing sample. But the special Interntional menu offers full-sized menu items covering a lot food forms and a lot of geographical territory.
Check it out!
The IMH includes a dazzling, flavour-packed array of burgers, sides, snacks and desserts…
Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich
“Enjoy this breaded seasoned chicken patty, covered in a delicious, sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce, topped with shredded lettuce, mayo-style sauce, on a sesame seed bun.” Thank you! It’s eerily like someone actually WAS listening when I mentioned in passing that I’m a pushover for Teriyaki ‘anything’!
Big Rösti
“Picture a beautifully beefy burger, hickory-smoked bacon, melt-in-your-mouth processed cheese, delicious cheese sauce and the jewel in the bun: our golden ‘Rösti’ hash brown. Served on a fluffy bun topped with rolled oats.”
McPizza Bites
An international twist on a Canadian fan favourite with, it’s ‘the antipasto you’ve been waiting for’. Made with melt-in-your-mouth mozzarella cheese and rich tomato sauce, all wrapped in a delicious, toasted pizza dough.”
Biscoff McFlurry
“This instant Belgian classic has finally made its way to Canadian shores! Think creamy vanilla soft serve swirled together with Biscoff® cookie crumbs.’ And what a great idea to habve on the menu during this, the summer of Canadian-invented McFLurry’s 30th birthday!
Plus a pair of new sauces…
Garlic Mayo-Style Sauce
Garlic-Mayo Style Sauce will be right up your street – it’s a UK classic favourite, perfect for dipping your McPizza Bites.” I get a warm, tingly feeling that it would be great on a McHashbrown, a Chicken McNugget or those new McPizza bites, just to name a few potential dance partners!
Sweet Tangy Chili Dip
“Get an authentic taste of Australia with the new Sweet Tangy Chili Dip! It’s sweet with a little kick that’ll give your McNuggets an extra zing and leave you asking for more.” I thought it looked suspici-ously like classic Thai Red Chili Chicken Sauce, which has long been a fan fave in Aus. It’s long been a fave of mine, too – and not just on Chicken!
My take
That oh-so-familiar-looking (and sounding) Sweet Tangy Chili Dip notwithstanding, There’s something distinctly familiar about the ‘Rösti’ on the Biog Rösti Burger, too. In fact the image (above) clearly shows what I’d say was a regular, ‘everywhere’ McHashbrown. That’s fine. Except that a real German ‘Kartoffelpuffer’ is supposed to showcase a creamy, eggy interior rather than come off like a Swiss ‘Potato Cake’ ‘Rösti’, which is supposted to ‘come off like a crispy hash brown patty all ’round.
But you have to give McD’s points for branding their North American Hashbrown as their version of a ‘Rösti’, in markets where ‘Rösti’ are traditionally something quite different. Saves them making some-thing different in every other market…
Bottom line… There’s not a single item on the Menu Heist list I wouldn’t love to try a least once!
