National Cheeseburger Day!

No Kidding! This is National Cheeseburger Day, and to celebrate McDonald’s is offering a $0.50 Double Cheeseburger. But you have to order using the McDonald’s mobile app, and you only get one. At that price. That’s just one of a multitude of commemorative specials offered across the Fast Food world today…

Taco Bell tries Taco Subscription

Here’s an interesting twist on the continuing campaign by virtually all fast food purveyors to get their fans to use their mobile ordering apps. Billed as ‘a digitally exclusive offering’, the new Taco Lover’s Pass gets users a taco a day for 30 days.

And at $10 per pass, it’s a really good deal (if you really, REALLY love tacos). But I wouldn’t expect this deal to last at that price if it goes mainstream. It’s currently being tested at 17 Arizona TB locations.

Burger King showcases ‘Keep It Real Meals’

BK is picking up the celebrity-themed-meals thread that seems to have been abandoned by McDonald’s recently, launching three new boxed deals: the Cornell Haynes Jr. Meal AKA Nelly (a Whopper with Cheese, no pickles); The Larissa Machado Meal AKA Anitta (an Impossible Whopper with mustard instead of mayo, no onions); and The Chase Hudson Meal AKA LilHuddy (a Spicy Ch’King with cheese). The celeb meals are available for just $6, for Royal Perks rewards members, at participating locations nationwide, while supplies last.

Panera tests new Chicken sammys

Panera Bread entered the Chicken Sandwich fray a while ago with its Chef’s Chicken Sandwiches menu. The Classic Chicken Sandwich with Aioli and Spicy Buffalo Chicken with Aioli.

The Classic features a garlic aioli with anchovies. The Spicy Buffalo Chicken version speaks for itself. They’re being test marketed at selected locations in North and South Carolina.

Panda Express tests Orange Chicken sammy

The new sandwich is the latest move in the Panda’s strategy to leverage its immensely popular Orange Chicken flavour in other formats. It’s already tried an Orange Chicken Burrito which was a smash hit. The Sammy includes boneless breast meat, with Orange Chicken Sauce on top, and shredded cabbage, pickles and a special aioli on the bottom. For now, it’s only available at the Panda Test Kitchen in Pasadena, CA. Too bad.

Nissin Noodles adds Hot & Spicy flavour

The new variety is dubbed Hot & Spicy Fire Wok Volcanic Mongolian Beef, and gets its distinctive character from dried kimchi, chili powder, garlic, salt, and ginger.

And a special ‘fire Lover’s Sauce’ packet is included if you want it even hotter. Available now exclusively at Walmart stores across the U.S., it may eventually be rolled out across the mass market, but no plans have yet been announced.

Wendy’s Canada does Caramel Latté Frosty

A mixed marriage between hot and cold foods rarely works – but this one probably will. It’s a simple blend of caramel, coffee and vanilla flavours which will temporarily replace plain vanilla on the Frosty menu for a limited time. Wendy’s Canada did a Strawberry Frosty for spring earlier this year.

Dairy Queen shakes Pumpkin Cookie Butter

This new-for-fall special flavour blends real pumpkin purée, milk, and cookie butter. It’s topped with whipped cream and grated nutmeg.

The Pumpkin Pie Blizzard is also back for a limited time only, to no one’s surprise, as part of the chain’s fall Blizzard line-up.

Baskin Robbins turns ‘Apple Pie’ inside-out

The ubiquitous premium ice cream vendor introduces a new flavour as flavour of the month: Inside-Out Apple Pie. It’s regular vanilla full of apple and pie crust pieces, and rippled with brown sugar and cinnamon. A nice contrast to the usual fall ‘Pumpkin-Pie-Spice-in-everything-everywhere’ drill. Elsewhere on the menu, BR is bringing back its popular Quarterback Crunch flavour to inaugurate the NFL football season.

And that’s the skinny…

… On what’s going to be making some of us fatter over the coming days and weeks. See you back here in 7 for the next edition of Fast Food Week!
