Food For Heroes: Trump Still Unclear On The Concept

Donald Trump used some of his rare time off from the Hush Money Trial last week to campaign on the streets of New York City. The most conspicuous stop was a Manhattan fire hall where Trump delivered a stack of pizzas to the front line heroes…

What he did…

He put his size-12s in it again, is what he did. This time, he gifted New York firefighters with pizza. Which was described as cold and stale by those on the front line for the event. The campaign stunt was planned well ahead of time, but the former president’s minions didn’t take into account the time span between getting the pies from the resto and serving them.

The pie faux pas coverage totally eclipsed the campaign event angle in the mainstream and online media.

History repeats itself…

Remember the media kerfuffle when Trump, when he was president, served the traditional White House victory supper to the the College Football National Champion Clemson University Tigers, in 20i9?

The event came in the mid of a White House staff labour dispute. And the usual protocol went out the window. So Trump made an executive decision. He sent out a small army of staffers to bring in mountains of fast food, of all known varieties. And the boys ate standing up.

Again… The menu garnered more media mention than the men in cleats.

And again…

Last year, then-former US President Donald Trump helped serve Thanksgiving lunch to a group of Texas National Guard soldiers. He was in the state to endorse Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for reelection. But he seemed to think the event was all about him…

He told reporters, after his ‘kitchen ‘shift’ was done: “The food looked very good. I wanted to have some, but they didn’t have any for me. They had none left. That’s not good. That’s my kind of food too.”

The luncheon episode easily pushed the Abbott story ‘off the front page’.

A thing about food…

Trump is well known to have a ‘thing’ about food. Almost as big a thing as his alleged clean-freak germophobia. And the media went totally nuts when Trump made a state visit to India. Where they don’t eat beef.

Can you remember any of the political or diplomatic issues raised during the visit? Me either.

My take

I don’t know what it is about Trump and food. He just doesn’t seem tuned into the significance or symbolism of food. But he does make fun feature media fodder on a slow day!

In or out of power, it appears he’s doomed to ‘step in the birthday cake’…
