The food at Disney Parks and Resorts gets a lot of media coverage. That’s because they bombard the media with ‘story ideas’ about their latest culinary achievements. Now, they’re pushing what they call ‘A Grilled Cheese Sandwich From Toy Story Land’…
The sammy is from the menu at the Woody’s Lunch Box eatery, at Disney’s Holly-wood Studios. And it’s anything but child’s play to put it together. The thing calls for preparation of both a cheese and a garlic ‘spread’, ‘artisan’ bread, and not only classic American, but real Provolone cheeses.
HOW many ingredients?
The recipe comes to us via The Disney Food Blog Team. It’s officially titled the ‘Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich’. And it’s touted as a big favourite among kids and parents, alike. (Ed. note: I imagine it’s also favoured by parents since it’s likely one of the least-expensive menu choices at the Park…)
The most convincing ‘copycat’ recipe we could find online calls for no fewer than eight ingredients. But the official Disney recipe specifies…
TEN ingredients:
Cream Cheese Spread
- 1/2 cup cream cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Double Gloucester or cheddar
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
Garlic Spread
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 3/4 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich
- 8 slices of artisan bread
- 8 cheddar cheese slices
- 8 provolone slices
When I last looked…
… Which was the day before yesterday when I made one, the Classic Grilled Cheese requires only Supermarket White Bread, Butter and American cheese. The only alteration I make to that pre-scription is, I add another slice of cheese to make mine extra ooey-gooey-cheesey-pulley good!
My take
I have to point out that the official photo of the Disney Grilled Cheese (above left) doesn’t look all that different from my own 5-minute, 3-ingredient take on the Classic. I’ll grant you, it probably tastes more complex and offers the promised nuances of garlic and Provolone.
So why all the culinary pomp and circumstance from Disney?
First, for the price they charge ($10.99) I guess they feel they’d better offer a product that at least sounds as though it’s worth the outlay. Of course, you also get that little cup of ‘Tomato-Basil Soup’, for sipping or sipping…
Alas! Even a carefully planned and executed official ‘glam’ photo can’t save the Disney sammy from looking… lame.
