‘Pi Day’ is the annual celebration in which we commemorate the world’s most popular infinite num-ber by baking and consuming its culinary namesake. I say… What better excuse for a party both focused on and filled with a classic dessert?
The mathematical constant ‘Pi’ (3.1415…) is the secret to calculating the more mysterious metrics of a circle: circumference and area. ‘Pie’, as we all know, is often the secret to calculating if we have en-ough room left for dessert…
The raison d’etre
The simple explanation is, Pi is inextricably bound to the geometric perfection of the circle. And Pie is, by definition, circular perfection.
Pi Day falls every year on March 14 – 3/14. At no other point on the calendar are we more in need of a little raucus recreation than this, the rag-end of winter, yet not quite spring.
Almost as an afterthought, The Times of India tells us, the date has also been, “designated as Inter-national Mathematics Day, an international celebration that seeks to acknowledge the importance of mathematical thought in scientific inquiry, technological innovation, and problem-solving in general.”
But we’re here for the food.
My take
Whatever else you do today, do pie. Whether you create a grand celebration of Pi-the-number (as in the photo above) or just grab an Apple Pie at McDonald’s, DO enjoy a slice of your fave today!
