Sweet Roll Dough Also Great For Savoury Snacks, Mains

Earlier this week, we talked about something special: Sweet Dough. And we also looked at how easy it was to turn that dough into soft, fluffy, delectable Cinnamon Rolls. Now, I’d like to suggest some savoury directions in which you can take Roll-Ups, creating crowd-pleasing mains the snacks…

Taco Roll Ups - ©cinnamonmspiceandeverythingncie.comI admit it. I’ve told people I could live on Cinnamon Rolls and rich, nutty, fragrant Colombian Coffee. But it’s not true. You also have to have Protein and Veggies – lots of veggies – to get the kind of diet that will help you live to 100. So, I’ve complied a list of savoury Roll-Ups you’ll love to make as breaks from the usual Soups and Stews and Roasts and Fry-Ups this cold weather season.

Add into the profile lots of opportunities to use up leftovers, and you’ve got a dark-horse dinner-time or game-day winner!

Changes to the Dough

If you’re going savoury rather than sweet with your Roll-Ups, you’ll want to make a few little changes to your Dough.

First, leave out the 3 tbsp. / 45 ml Sugar from the dry ingredients list for the Dough recipe. Also, change out the Melted Butter and Corn Oil from the Yeast prep ingredient list in favour of your favourite cooking grade Olive Oil. You’ll think you’re eating some other kind of bread completely when you taste the end product! The Olive Oil flavour works with all savoury Roll-Up fillings.

The overall technique, rising times and other prep instructions remain the same.

Go Italian…

Spread your favourite Bruschetta, Pizza or Calzone ingredients over the sheet of Dough and roll up as directed in our Cinnamon Roll recipe post. Bake as directed sprinking with shredded Mozzarella all over the top, and serve hot with Marinara Sauce along side for dipping. (Shown, top of page: Pizza Rolls.)

Go Tex-Mex…

Spread Nacho or Fajita ingredients thinly over the Dough sheet, roll, top with shredded Mozzarella or Jack Cheese, and bake as directed. Serve hot with Green and Red Sauce for dipping and some fresh Pico de Gallo on the side. (Shown, left: Taco Rolls.)

Go Greek…

Spread Dough sheet with crumbled Feta and / or Halloumi Cheeses, sprinkle with Greek Oregano top with small cubes or shreds of Greek Grilled Lamb. Serve hot with Tzatziki Sauce on the side for Dipping.

Go Asian…

Roll-Ups and Asian flavours don’t sound as if they’d go together, but trust me: they do. Spread your Dough with your favourite Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala, Korma or Teriyaki Cooking Sauce and top with shredded or small-cubed leftover Chicken. Top rolled and panned Rolls with shredded Mozzarella or Jack Cheese and bake as directed in original recipe. Serve with plain or flavoured (your choice) Yogurt to temper the hot, spicy Cooking Sauce flavours as desired.

Go Polynesian…

SPAM and Pineapple are a couple of can’t-go-wrong flavours to consider for ‘Hawaiian’ Roll-ups. Pulled Pork is also great (finely shredded). Shredded Jack and Mozz Cheese are both appropriate buddies for Pork or SPAM. What else would you love on your Polynesian Roll-Ups?
