Fast Food Week: Quick Service Resto And Snacks News!

Wow! Vaccines or no vaccines, it seems the snack and confectionery makers are looking forward to a ‘hand-to-mouth’ summer! I guess the avalanche of new Fast Food treats and snack flavours announced this past week could also be seen as a celebration of mask freedom!

Subway Melts - © 2021 SubwayUncharacteristically for me, when dealing with Subway issues,
I have to admit these new melts look pretty good…

Subway branches out into Melts

Subway – the guys who used to be so cheap with their meat and cheese ingredients, and never dared add or amend a menu offering for decades – are making another foray into the unknown, adding three new ‘melts’: the Ham & Cheese Melt; the Tuna Melt; and the Steak & Cheese Melt. They’re 6 in. subs by default, but you can make any of them footlings for just a buck extra. Hard for me to say this about a Subway menu item after many years of grousing about their service and customer communications issues, but these new melts look pretty good…

Wendy’s adds Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger

This rich, aromatic Burger starts with a toasted premium bun, adds a regular hamburger patty with slices of American (Processed) cheese top and bottom, and gets a garnish of three pieces of applewood-smoked bacon, Bourbon Bacon sauce and crispy-fried onions. According to the news release, the burger is intended to pay homage to two American classics: The Cheeseburger and Bourbon. I’m looking for further ‘homage’ offerings from Wendy’s through the summer.

Domino’s offers 49 percent off ANY Pizza ordered online

That’s about the whole deal on the deal. It’s good now through May 23, from 4 p.m. through 9 p.m. One other4 catch: You have pick up your purchase via carside delivery. If you’re a Domino’s fan, now.the the time to stock up. Yes, I said stock up. I love lerftover deliver4y pizza warmed up for a couple of minutes per slice in the microwave – or 5 minutes in a pre-heated 375 F oven. And I’ve come up with a simple way to re-heat frozen delivery pizza. Heat for 7-10 minutes, on the middle rack in a standard oven, at 400 to 425 FD. It’ll bubble on top and the bottom of the crust will crisp up nicely. Although – you’ll have to monitor the pizza’s progress to determine the perfect time for each kind of pie. Ideal time to heat depends on number of toppings and crust thickness.

Starbucks mixes its metaphors…

Starbucks is featuring a special summer Strawberry Funnel Cake Frappuccino. Believe me; it doesn’t look half so weird as it sounds. How it tastes, I cannot personally attest. It’s built from layers of whipped cream, strawberry puree sauce, and funnel cake-flavored Frappuccino. Not a bad look, really… The whole thing is topped off with a sprinkle of funnel cake crumbs, whipped cream and a strawberry drizzle…

… Brings back the Unicorn Cake Pop…

You remember those, right? White cake pops with confetti sprinkles shaped like a unicorn head, dipped in white chocolate icing, and decorated to complete the unicorn look. This is another summer specialty, which should be around for a couple of months, at least…

… Launches line of premium Instant Coffees

Starbuck’s is now offering a trio of ‘Premium Instant Coffees’: Blonde Roast (“Bright and complex with a crisp, sweet flavor”) ; Medium Roast (“A perfectly balanced Latin American coffee with creamy notes of milk chocolate and nuts”); and Dark Roast (“A sweet, toasted flavor with delicious notes of dark chocolate”). Sounds yummy. But I have to say I won’t be convinced of the ‘premiumness’ of these quaffs until, I’ve tried them. I’ve simply never been impressed with instant coffee of any breed…

Ben & Jerry’s launches Non-Dairy flavours

Ben& Jerry’s, having announced its special summer flavours, has now revealed an array of 5 non-dairy flavours: Colin Kaepernick’s Change the Whirled (which was introduced early this year), and non-dairy versions of Tonight Dough starring Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream, Karamel Sutra, and Phish Food. They’re now at retailers across the chain.

Lays launches summer flavours

Lays – the guys for whom launching new flavours is a full-time job – are rolling out three new summer flavours: Chile Mango; Wavy Jerk Chicken; and a Summer BLT. As usual, they’re limited edition offerings which should be around for the summer. Look for them in the usual places starting this week.

Rice Crispies Treats Brings Back Strawberry

Remember when Rice Crispies treats were something you made at home ‘in minutes, with only three ingredient’? If you only remember the pre-made ones from the supermarket, this will 1nterest you more than it does me. Kelloggs is bringing back the Strawberry flaoured ones – at least for the summer. Look for combo packs of Chocolate, Original and Strawberry, and single-flavour packs of Strawberry alone around the end of this month.

Summer Time, and the Skittles are rainbow

Summer usually means a string of Pride Parades across the map, and Skittles is once again supporting LGBTTQ initiat6ives by offer8ingn Pride Skittles in single-serving and share-sized packages. The Skittles themselves are uniformly grey on the outside, but feature a selection of flavours including: strawberry, orange, grape, green apple, and lemon. They’re coming to Walmart stores almost immediately and will appear in all the usual places by early next month.

And that’s the skinny…

… On what’s going to make some of us a little fatter over the coming nays and weeks. Heck! Over the whole summer! See you back here in 7 with a fresh edition of Fast Food Week!
