Fast Food Week: Quick Service Restaurant And Snacks News!

Competition among chicken purveyors is intense this week. Also heavy action at Taco Bell, where they’re celebrating the success of the ‘Free Taco Tuesday’ legal battle and test-flying a flock of new menu items in two separate markets. And new breakfast sammys at Wendy’s…

New breakfast sandwiches at Wendy’s

Wendy’s has finally come around to the classic way of thinking about breakfast sammys. Their new bacon-and-egg and sausage-and-egg offerings are each mounted on classic English Muffins and feature an egg and a slice of American (Processed) cheese. And, yes, the sausage patties are classically Wendy’s: square instead of round. We couldn’t tell from the pix supplied how big the new sammys are. But they just might give the other major chains a run for their money.

Chick-Fil-A gets hot

CFA is now offering a spicy version of its classic chicken sandwich (see photo, top of page). The Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich is a real mouthful. On top of the traditional crispy fried chicken breast you get pickled Jalapeño rounds, a spicy honey drizzle and a dollop of new Creamy Pimento Cheese spread. Débuting at participating CFA outlets starting August 28. Will probably be available through September, at least.

KFC floats big chicken discounts

KFC is offering three limited time crispy chicken deals, at participating locations. Get a 10-piece order of KFC Nuggets for $5, 8 pieces of original Dried Chicken or 8 Tenders for $10.

The Colonel’s kids are also bringing back the $20 Fill-Up Box (see photo, directly above). It’s called ‘Keeping up with the other chicken guys’, who are currently offering big specials and new products.

Half-price pizzas at Domino’s

It’s a BOGO deal, offering 50 percent off all menu-priced pizzas. The only catch is, you have to order online. “Since summer is winding down, we wanted to give customers a special deal to enjoy during the last few days of the season. And what better deal than half off pizza?” said Kate Trumbull, Domino’s senior vice president – chief brand officer. For once, it’s not a deal designed to get you to use the app. Surf on over to www.dominos.com to order.

Free Tacos at Taco Bell…

No purchase required! Just come in and claim your free taco, every Tuesday, now through September 5. You’ll get a Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco with seasoned beef, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheddar cheese in a Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos taco shell.

It’s billed as a celebration of the Bell’s legal victory over Taco John’s in the fight to ‘free’ the ‘Taco Tuesday’ slogan.

…Tests Chili Crispy selections…

Future menu tweaks, that is. The Bell is reported testing three new ‘Chili Crispy’ selections at one Newport Beach, Cali. location, for one week only. They’re dosing their Crispy Chicken with a new hot sauce blending Anaheim, Ancho and Guajillo chilis, garlic, lime and miscellaneous seasonings. The prototype Crispy Chili Chicken Tacos and Chicken Strips are available while supplies last.

… and new shredded Beef Burrito

The Bell is testing a new Shredded Beef Grilled Cheese Burrito at participating locations in Oklahoma City. It’s an amplification of the chain’s regular Grilled Cheese Burrito.

You get shredded beef in place of the usual signature ground beef, and a traditional green sauce in place of creamy Chipotle sauce and warm Nacho sauce. Sounds good to me. And bravo for bringing back Green Sauce to the major brand stage.

Doritos launches new spicy option

It’s an odd-sounding combo, but it grows on you. Frito-Lay has unveiled Spicy Pineapple Jalapeno Doritos. It’s the latest component of the Doritos Solid Black community give-back program. It’s described officially as, “an ongoing initiative from Doritos to provide resources and a platform for Black Changemakers who use innovation and boldness to drive culture and give back to their communities.”

Hot Ones and Hot Pockets team on spicy pockets

Hot Ones hot sauce is providing the heat and Hot Pockets is providing the hand pies. “We’re focused on pushing boundaries in culture to engage Hot Pockets fans in hyper-relevant ways,” said Bryan Waddell, Brand Marketing Manager.

“Our collaboration with Hot Ones combines that brand promise with their unquestioned authority on heat to deliver a truly unique and impactful snacking experience.”

And that’s the skinny…

… On this week’s top choices and hottest deals on the food-to-go that’s going to make some of us a little fatter over the end of summer. See you back here in 7 for the next edition of Fast Food Week!
