Fast Food Week: Quick Service Restaurant And Snacks News!

At last! Easter and St. Paddy’s Day specials have begun to sprout all over the Fast Food landscape like crocuses in spring. On the down side, at least one big burger chain is cutting back on portons while raising prices as the supply chain crisis persists. And… Anybody for Taco Jelly Beans?

Supply chain issues hit Burger King

BK is removing the Whopper from its value menu, and instituting other measures to deal with continuing supply chain issues: “[A]ctions in this regard from our franchisor[s] include lifting price caps on value menu items and reducing the number of nuggets [in] meals from 10 pieces to 8,” Burger King CEO Daniel Accordino says, in a statement. Additional cost cutting and inventory control measures are expected through this year. Judging by the most recent reports from the supply chain, BK could be just the first of the major Fast Food chains to make menu and price changes.

Arby’s touts Reuben for St. Paddy’s Day

Well, it IS corned beef and cabbage, after all! The Double Stack Reuben features 7 oz. / 200 g of corned beef, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing, and sauerkraut on toasted marble rye.

Sign me up! In fact, I’ve already had one, day before yesterday, and it was a wonderful experience, even if the cabbage WAS German!

Free Guac for St. Paddy’s Day

Del Taco is offering free Guacamole on St. Patrick’s Day – aside from the shredded lettuce, the only green item on their menu/ingredient list. All Guac is free, and that extends to two or three scoops on any menu item. The catch is, you have to be a registered member of the Del Yeah! rewards program, and there’s a limit of one freebie per guest.

An Irish Flavour of the Month at BR

Baskin Robbins is featuring Golden OREO Irish Cream as it’s flavour of the month for March. I think St, Patrick would approve.

It’s Irish Cream ice cream swirled with Belgian Chocolate ice cream, with a ribbon of Graham Cracker crumbs and Golden OREO cookie pieces throughout.

Pillsbury reprises Easter Cookies

The kings of cookie dough in a log – now in a bag – are bringing back their pre-shaped Easter cookies, with bunnies, chicks, eggs and plain sugar cookie dough (see photo, top of page). They’re round cookies with embedded ‘faces’. But now they’re also pre-sliced, so all you have to do is put ’em on a tray and slide ’em into a pre-heated oven. For some folks, they’re an Easter tradition!

Kellogg’s branches out to Easter Treats

Kellogg’s is doing more this year than plumping Easter versions of its iconic Rice Crispies Treats. In fact, it’s released three new products featuring its cereals: new Rice Krispies Milk Chocolate Rabbit, Apple Jacks White Candy Rabbit, and Rice Krispies Milk Chocolate Eggs.

The chocolate confections come at what first appears a low-low price. But take note that they’re about 2/3 cereal and 1/3 chocolate, so you have to gauge the financial side of the deal accordingly. Not an issue, of course, if you love Rice Krispies!

Hostess brings back Spring Twinkies

Hostess is bringing back an array of bright, tasty seasonal specialties for spring/Easter: Cotton Candy, Carrot Cake Donettes, and Vanilla Cupcakes. Available now through April 6, while supplies last.

Ready for Taco Jelly Beans?

Brachs thinks you are. Or somebody is. They’ve launched Late Night Taco Truck Jelly Beans, a mix of Margarita, Churro, Salsa, Guacamole, Beef Taco and Horchata flavours.

The idea is to play off the ‘late-night taco run’ mentality. Sorry. My taste buds and I can’t rationalize Tex-Mex flavoured candy. Even if they are sweetened. Only at Walgreen’s, at least for a start.

Novelty Alert: Papa John’s offers idle ball players jobs

Well, it’s a symbolic gesture, really. MLB players siting idle during the current lockout can take advantage of the Pre-Season Pizza Pro program, which gets them a position as a pizza maker at Papa John’s. Responsibilities include: “Performing dough-to-sauce-to-cheese-to-toppings-to-oven quintuple plays daily.” The official recruiting ad is a real hoot, but PJ’s insists the offer is on the up-and-up. No takers reported as of this writing…

And that’s the skinny..

… On what’s going to be making some of us a little fatter – but cheerier – now through Easter. See you back here in 7 for for the next delightfully greasy, sickeningly sweet edition of Fast Food Week!
