A nice change in the new menu-item line-up this week! A few lingering Hallowe’en specials, another MLB playoffs home-runs collab, a new near-0-carbs bread option from Subway, and a sprinkling of International Alerts featuring wild and crazy ‘roulette’ pizzas and spicy Asian sandwiches…

Free Krispy Kreme doughnut tomorrow

Tomorrow is Hallowe’en, and by all indications there will be lots more kids out Trick-or -Treating this year. I don’t want to debate the safety, healthiness or any other facets of the practice here. I just wanted to let you know you can get a free original glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut tomorrow if you show up at the store wearing a Hallowe’en costume, while the ‘Hot Light’ is on. No purchase necessary!

Free Doritos Locos Tacos for MLB playoffs

It’s the return of the ‘Steal a Base, Steal a Taco’ promotion, which promises free tacos if a base was stolen during this year’s MLB World Series. It’s available now as a reward when you order via the mobile app and will be ‘open’ as of November 4.

In case you forgot, the Doritos Locos Taco is based on TB’s signature seasoned beef with lettuce and shredded cheese in a Nacho Cheese Doritos taco shell.

Burger King shocks with Frankenburger

BK’s Hallowe’en special this year is what it calls the Franken Whopper: a big, tall overstuffed ‘stitched-together’ creation based on a traditional Whopper, featuring a layer of Fries and a layer of Mac and Cheese. Get it until the close of business tomorrow, by ordering through your BK mobile app.

Church’s chicken pops out Chicken-Bacon sammy

Church’s (which, in Canada at least, you’ll find tagging along with Harvey’s Burgers) is launching a new Fried Chicken Sandwich with Bacon. The regular sammy is boosted by bacon and topped with pickles and mayo. You can get it with any of three sauces: Original, Spicy, and Smoky Honey-Q. Available through December 26.

Subway testing new low-carb bread

The guys you used to despise for their cheap take on meat and cheese fillings are continuing their recently-launched image renovation program introducing a one-net-carb bread.

Called Hero Bread, the stuff contains 0 grams of sugar, 1 (g) net of carbs, 12 grams of protein, 26 grams of fiber and only 100 calories per 6 in. sandwich. The new, healthier bread option is on a very limited test, now until the end of the year, in Idaho, Colorado, Iowa and Georgia.

International Alert: Domino’s Aus/NZ plays roulette

Domino’s Pizza Australia and New Zealand is offering what it calls Halloween Pizza Roulette, with a new ‘pizza option’. Order any regular pie on a classic base, and ask to play roulette. The bakers will dose one slice with Domino’s new Carolina Reaper hot sauce. You roll the dice when you pick your slice. It’s available down under until close of business tomorrow.

International Alert: McDonald’s Japan tropes again…

McD’s Japan is rolling out a new Spicy double burger using Rice Cakes as buns. The Gohan Kara Dabuchi — which translates (using creative licence) to “Spicy Double Cheese Rice Burger’ – is two patties each topped with a slice of chili pepper-infused American (Processed) Cheese (see photo, top of page). The patties are crowned with onions, ketchup, mustard and sliced jalapeños. The big feature is, two crispy rice cakes are used as bun halves. This has been done before but not in such a grand manner.

… McD’s Korea does Spicy Mac and Cheese

The Mac and Cheese is in a bun, not a bowl, which is one feature that makes the menu item noteworthy. This has been done before, but not by McD’s and not with a spicy kick.

But the M&C is infused with cayenne pepper, and appears on top of a Fried Chicken Breast. On top of that comes lettuce, mayo and crispy bacon. That’s one major mouthful!

And that’s the skinny…

… On what’s going to be making some of us a little (on top of the Hallowe’en treats) over the coming days and weeks. See you back her in 7 for the next edition of Fast Food News!
