Fast Food Week: Quick Service Resto And Snacks News!

A couple of ‘mains and sides’ announcements this week, but mostly more Deserts, Beverages and Snacks. Seems I was right last week when I opined as the manufacturers are skewing their new releases towards handheld Sandwiches and Treats perfect for the new, non-dine-in Summer of COVID-19…

Say ‘Goodbye’ to KFC Potato Wedges

KFC has quietly announced that it has started phasing out its popular Potato Wedges in favour of its new Secret Recipe Fries across the U.S. Some KFC fans are outraged, others point out that they can get Fries anywhere but Wedges are few and far between, and a few who have tried the new Fries admit they are tasty, but just not the same. The end of an era. But KFC did warn Fries fans that a test release of the new Fries earlier this year was very successful…

Arby’s adds three new Chicken Wraps

Arby’s is taking a break form it’s usual concentraton on Beef to introduce three new Chicken Wraps to the menu: the Chicken Club Wrap; the Creamy Mediterranean Chicken Wrap; and the Jalapeno Bacon Ranch Chicken Wrap. Get the details at the Arby’s Menu Webpage. Unlike most major Fast Food menu additions these days, there’s no indication that these new Wraps are here for a limited time only, but Arby’s doesn’t specify exactly what it has in mind.

Baskin-Robbins serves up new ‘Creations’

In an effort to make the ‘Summer of CIVID-19’ a little happier for the young set, Baskin-Robbins has whipped up three new Ice Cream Desserts: Creature Creations come in three varieties: the Mermaid, the Unicorn, and the Monster. There’s also a new Surprise Party Ice Cream flavour with pink and blue Cake Batter-flavored Ice Cream swirled with Yellow Buttercream-flavored Ice Cream. The latter is also the B-R Flavour of the Month.

Dairy Queen and Nestlé partner for new Blizzard

Not surprisingly, the new Drumstick Blizzard is the July, 2020, DQ Flavour of the Month. Since just about everyone knows what a Drumstick is, I won’t bore you with a rundown Let’s just say that the Blizzard is a blend of Drumstick Chocolate Coated Su7gar Come pieces and Peanuts blended with Soft Serve. Literally, a spoonable Drumstuck in a Shake cup.

Sonic pours new Lemonberry Slush Float

Sonic has a new treat for summer: The Lemonberry Slush Float. It starts with a layer of Frozen Lemonade Slush, adds a layer of Vanilla Soft Serve and tops that with a layer of Copped Strawberries. They serve it with a Shake straw, but I’m not convinced that a Sundae Spoon wouldn’t be more appropriate. At participating locations across the chain until August 2.

Snickers branches out to Brownies

After trying just about all imaginable flavour combos of Snickers Bars, MARS has announced that it will soon branch out to Brownies with new Peanut Brownie Squares. They start with a slab of Peanut-riddled Chocolate Brownie filling topped with the same kind of Caramel you’re used to in a regular Snicker’s Bar, and enrobed in the usual Milk Chocolate. You’ll get two ‘Squares’ per packet. Get the complete lowdown at the official website.

Starbuck’s gets tough on masking

‘No Mask, No Service’ is the new mantra at Starbucks as of July 15. All customers will have to wear masks to enter Starbuck’s shops. And all staff will continue wearing masks, as they have been all along during the COVID-19 crisis. Observers are calling it an informed stance, which comes into effect just as COVID-19 case counts surge back across the U.S. For those who object to wearing masks, delivery, curbside pickup, and drive-thru orders are alternative options to going inside, but only, “at select locations where a local government mandate is not in place.”

Merch Alert! Panda Express gets ‘antisocial’

Wait! It’s not what it sounds like. Panda Express is holding a while-supplies-last online sale of logo wear supporting social distancing. Very-limited stock clothing items including hats, hoodies and t-shirts come emblazoned with the logo of the Panda’s ‘Anti Social Social Club’. When we visited the website at 07:50 EDT this morning (just n20 minutes after the site opened for business), all items were shown as ‘SOLD OUT’. We do most earnestly hope that a second edition of this quirky but wearable merchandise is made available soon.

And that’s the skinny on…

… What’s going to be making some of us fatter over the days, weeks and months to come. See you back here next week for another edition of Fast Food Week!
