Fast Food Week: Quick Serve Resto and Snacks News…

Summer must be a really good time to run test marking programs because most of the major Fast Food chains are testing something this month… KFC is floating a couple of Tex-Mex specialties, and McDonald’s and Dunkin’s are gauging customer response to new Breakfast Sandwiches…

KFC enters Taco race…

With most of the other Fast Food giants already in the running, KFC has entered the Taco Sweepstakes with a new Double Taco. It’s reminiscent of the Taco Bell Cheesy Gordita Crunch, but with Salsa between the outer Flour Tortilla and the inner Corn flattie. The stuffing features a Chicken Strip topped with Cheese, Tomatoes, Onion and Guacamole. The catch is, it’s only around for a limited time, and only in France.

… Tries out Crispy Tender Hot Dogs

At the same time, KFC France is also testing a Crispy Tender Hot Dog. Like the Taco, it’s based on a Crispy Chicken Strip which is topped with American (Processed) Cheese, Jalapeños, Hot Sauce and Mustard. It’s also around for a limited time only. No word when either may be coming to North America.

McDonald’s tests Chicken Breakfast Sandwiches

Chicken Patty-based Chicken McGriddle and McChicken Biscuit are just that: a Chicken Patty on either a Bun or a Biscuit. They’re definitively derived from the discontinued McChicken Sandwich except there’s no Mayo or Lettuce – which makes sense for a Breakfast Sammy. I’m guessing you can get dipping sauces. They’ve quietly shown up on the Value Menu at various McD’s locations round the U.S., but there’s no indication if or when they’ll be floated chain-wide. Soon would be good.

Dunkin’s adds ‘Beyond Meat’ Sausage, Egg and Cheese

Joining the majority of Fast Food giants, Dunkin’s has added a Beyond Sausage Veggie Protein-based Sausage, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich to its lineup at all Manhattan locations. There are strong indications that the menu item will be rolled out across the U.S. as soon as production of the ‘Sausage’ patties can get up to speed. When that will be remains unannounced. Unlike other chains, which are selling Beyond Meat-based menu items for a premium compared to their regular versions, Dunkin’s is selling its new Breakfast Sammy at a price comparable to its regular version.

Baskin Robbins adds Vegan flavours

The ‘Flavour of the Month’ guys have expanded their horizons to include two new Vegan, non-Dairy flavours: Non-Dairy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Non-Dairy Chocolate Extreme. The new products are also free from artificial flavourings, high-frustose Corn Syrup and are certified Kosher. They roll out at all BR locations starting August 1.

Vacation in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile?

The privilege can only be yours if you book early via AirBNB. Well, it could have been yours if the deal hadn’t sold out moments after the opportunity opened up. No word if there will be another chance later in the summer. The 27 ft. / 12 m Wienermobile accommodates two snugly and features a mini fridge packed with – what else? – Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs, plus a roll-away OM Grill and a selection of OM Wiener Wear both of which you can keep.

Fast (Food) Fact: Girl Scout Cookies

In case you’ve never stopped to think about it, or wondered without being able to find the answer… It’s been officially confirmed that, if Girl Scout Cookies was an actual company, it would be – with its many flavours and mammoth sales – the second largest Cookie seller in the U.S. I’ll give you one guess who would be the largest. That’s right – OREOs. Now, you know…

And that’s the skinny on what will be making some of us fatter in the coming days and weeks. Back in 7 with another weekly roundup of Fast Food News!
