Spring is finally on its way here in the Great White North. I know this because the bottom half of our little back yard has been churned to mud by the raucous play of Riley The Wonder Dog. Also, the Fast Food sector menus are sprouting seasonal specials faster than the trees are sprouting leaves…

Taco Bell wants you to stay, literally
The Bell is inaugurating a first in the Fast Food sphere this summer: opening a Taco-themes hotel in ritzy Palm Springs , CA. Curiously, this hotel will be open for a limited time only, and guests must be 18 or over to stay. One wonders what it’s offering as entertainment. We do know it will feature an ‘immersive’ Taco-themed experience from Fire Sauce packet pool floaties to a menu that will add surprise items alongside the Bell’s full regular menu. The Gift Shop will, of course, feature all the Taco Bell merch you could ever want. Alas, we’ll have to wait until after August 9, the official opening date, for reviews.
Subway partners with Aladdin for summer
Subway is promoting its Fresh Fit Kids’ Meals with a movie partnership. Now through June 27, buy a Kids’ Meal at Subway and get a free children’s movie ticket to see the new live-action Aladdin movie. The Kids’ Meal consists of: a kid-sized Sandwich, Apple Sauce, a Drink and a toy. Pretty shrewd of the studio to give away a free ticket for the kid knowing that at least one parent will be buying a full-pop adult ticket at the theatre!
Starbuck’s adds to Summer Luncheon Menu
Starbuck’s is offering a fancy Grilled Cheese Sammy and a new Veggie Wrap for Summer (see photo above). The Sandwich features Sourdough Bread crusted with a Butter and Parmesan blend and stuffed with a Three Cheese Blend. The Baja Black Bean Veggie Wrap starts with a Spinach Tortilla and fills it with Black Beans, Quinoa, Salsa Slaw (Cabbage and Chipotle Salsa), Spinach and Carrots, topped with Jalapeno Cream Cheese Spread and Pepper Jack Cheese. For Dessert, they’ve brought back their popular Frosted Donut Cake Pop.
Popeye’s celebrates Summer Fair Season
When you think Summer Fair food, you think of crazy ingredient mach-ups and deep-frying stuff you’d never otherwise deep-fry – like Mars Bars or Ice Cream. Popeye’s is offering deep fried Double Stuff OREOs Bites (see photo top of page) for a limited time, in 2- or 4-piece orders.
OREOs brings back a classic favourite
S’Mores flavoured OREOs are back for a limited time, with Graham Cracker flavoured Cookies bookending layers of Chocolate and Marshmallow flavoured filling. Not only that, but OREO is also launching a limited-edition commemorative version marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this summer. They’re the usual Chocolate Cookie and Vanilla Stuff combo, but with specially embossed ‘Moon’ cookies. Keep your eyes peeled…
Hershey’s talks Emoji Bars
They’re the usual Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, partitioned into a dozen little rectangles for easy sharing, but each piece is imprinted with different Emoji symbol instead of the familiar Hershey name. Hershey’s assures parents that the 25 different Emojis they’re using were, “carefully selected by parents and kids to feature meanings that would help to spark a conversation and make new connections.” Nothing naughty or even the least bit negative about those, for sure.
