Royal Vignette: Current, Future Kings Share Love Of Curries

We always enjoy sharing with you any spicy bits of gossip that leak out about the food foibles and peckish preferences of the British Royal Family. It’s been a while, but we now hear both King Charles and the Prince of Wales are curry lovers!

King Charles III is well known to be a devotée of fresh produce (exclusively provided by his personal estates). And he’s a great proponent of sustainability and lighter, veggie-oriented eating in general. But now, it’s been revealed that, as conventional as many of his previously known preferences are, he’s also a fan of curries. As is his eldest son, the Prince of Wales.

Everything in moderation…

As befits a sovereign who is expected to represent all his subjects, Charles revealed a fairly-detailed knowledge newly-elected MPs’ constituencies during a meet-and-greet earlier this week. During his chats, new Labour MP Dierdre Costigan shared: “I said, I’m from Ealing Southall. […] Straight away, he knew [that] was Little India. And he talked about his love of curries.” But His Majesty admitted he doesn’t like them ‘too strong’, she added.

The next Royal generation, however, appears to take an even broader view of global cuisines and flavour traditions.

The King’s eldest son and heir to the throne, Prince William told a popular UK podcast back in 2020, he also loves curry ‘takeaways’. But he’s just as conservative in his heat preferences as his father.

His spouse, the Duchess of Cambridge loves Curries, too. In fact, she’s on record as saying ‘almost anything goes’ at the Cambridge’s dinner table. She jokes that supper often involves a tough decision between pizza and Chinese food…

A major contrast…

The bi-generational royal enjoyment of curries is quite a contrast with the well-known distaste of the previous monarch for spicy foods of all types. In fact, several former royal chefs have remarked that one of the first and foremost rules for serving the palace royals – as personally directed by the late Queen – was ‘nothing spicy’!

In fact, her Majesty was well-known to harbour a preference for sweets, heaping her afternoon-tea scones with butter and fruit preserves. And her favourite birthday cake was a rich, sweet chocolate-on-chocolate affair.

My take

There are folks folks who say the Royal Family is out of touch and increasingly irrelevant to the mod-ern UK and Commonwealth. These recent revelations about food preferences and the associated awareness of globlal cuisines and cultural traditions appears to prove just the opposite!
