Menu Madness: Breakfast Ramen?

You’ve probably tried a quick bowl of instant noodles for just about every meal and snack in the daily rotation. But I’ll bet you haven’t had it for Breakfast. Now, a crazy food blogger has come up with a recipe for that he calls ‘Breakfast Ramen’ and I have some issues with both the idea and his execution…

I’ll have mine on a bed of Cheddary, gooey Mac and Cheese!

Josh Elkin has a popular Instagram account where he posts videos of his far-our creations. His latest, as of this posting, is this one, showing how he makes what he calls ‘Breakfast Ramen.

It contains a wide variety of ingredients including:

  • 2 eggs
  • 6 strips cooked bacon, chopped
  • 2 breakfast sausage links
  • 2 packs ramen noodles, without the seasoning
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tbsp salted butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 shallots, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Tabañero hot sauce
  • 1 ½ c chicken stock
  • 1 ½ c milk
  • 2 c shredded cheddar cheese

I could tell, just by looking at the list, above, that the Ramen component was nothing more than a ceremonial  gesture to include the Ramen, not a whole-hearted attempt to build a true Breakfast Dish with Ramen front and centre. And I wondered about the wisdom of Hot Sauce…

I also didn’t relish the inclusion of the Broth from the Noodles in the main bowl. Not my idea of a breakfasty texture in a dish. I would not, however, say no to a cup of it on the side.

Here’s an idea that sprang directly to mind when I was considering the pros and cons of Breakfast Ramen…

Breakfast Mac and Cheese!

And it’s as easy as putting the key ‘breakfast’ ingredients in the Ramen recipe into and on top of a nice, steaming bowl of Cheddary, gooey Mac and Cheese! Think of it… Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, Shallots, Scallions and Garlic… That’s all the food groups in one place and an amazing flavour  and texture experience, too, I’m thinking!

I’m planning to make some Mac and Cheese this weekend just so I’ll have some left over so I can try this. If you try it, let me know what you thought, and what enhancements you made to the ‘recipe’…
