Champagne is Good for You: I’ll Drink to That!

At last! The learned study we’ve all been waiting for! A group of British researchers has discovered that Champagne contains beneficial ingredients that could help us stay healthier, as well as happier, in a wide variety of ways. The best news since Red Wine was declared good for your heart!

Let’s all raise our glass to the Boffins at The University of Reading, UK, who’ve released findings from a study proclaiming Champagne a potential panacea for some of life’s most aggravating ‘conditions’.

“These exciting results illustrate for the first time that the moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning, such as memory,” says Professor Jeremy Spencer of the University’s Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences. “We encourage a responsible approach to alcohol consumption, and our results suggest that a very low intake of one to two glasses a week can be effective.”

Curiously, Spencer mentions no upper limit on Champagne consumption in search of better health and greater contentment. But that’s another story…

The nitty-gritty…

The components in Champagne that are responsible for today’s good news are called polyphenols, or phenolic compounds, previously thought to lack biological activity. But now, Spencer and his team believe they can enhance spatial memory and may have benefits for other cognitive functions. Levels of phenolics, it turns out, drop in our systems as we age and the new findings show that lower phenolic levels could be connected with development of brain function issues as we age – from simple dementia to Alzheimer’s

The study went largely unnoticed when it first surfaced in May, 2013. Spencer and his fellows published their findings based on studies with rats. Since then, they’ve been looking into extrapolating their findings to humans. Hooray, for that!

This latest discovery fits hand-in-glove with earlier findings by the same team that, “two glasses of champagne a day may be good for your heart and circulation and could reduce the risks of suffering from cardiovascular disease and stroke.”

Cheers!
