Fast Food Week: Quick Service Resto And Snacks News

Seems it’s Chicken Week at the FFB. We have announcements from Church’s, Chick-Fil-A, Popeye’s and Sonic – two of which mark the opening of new fronts in the Chicken Sandwich War. There’s also word of a new IHOP Fast Food chain and a Burger King ‘meatless’ resto…

SONIC offers Chicken Po-Boy

Like many limited time offers, this one will be around only long enough to be missed by those who come to love it. It’s a handful of Jumbo Popcorn Chicken chunks in a Hoagie roll, topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and creamy blackened mayo (?). The mayo is described as, “smoky, Southern-style […] with subtle notes of thyme, oregano, red pepper and paprika.” Get the sammy from May 31 through June 27 at participating outlets.

Church’s reprises Bourbon Black Pepper Chicken

Church’s Chicken is bringing back its unique Bourbon Black Pepper Smokehouse Chicken. There’s that ‘blackened’ tie-in, again… For those who haven’t tried it, it’s described as: A bone-in half chicken, bathed in a savory, smoky marinade; deep-fried naked; then glazed with a sweet, smoky bourbon sauce and sprinkled with cracked black pepper. It’s available until the end of August.

Popeye’s opens yet another new front in Chicken Sammy War!

Popeye’s is adding an new Blackened Chicken version to its uber-popular Chicken Sandwich ‘line’. The blackened chicken breast is roasted, not fried, and pays homage to the ‘blackened’ specialties of New Orleans. Aside from the change-up in the chicken breast, it’s a twin of the original Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich with pickles and mayo on a brioche bun. Which is pretty much a twin of the original ‘original’ Chick-Fil-A chicken Sandwich. Speaking of which…

Chick-Fil-A introduces Little Blue Menu

It’s a delivery-only menu featuring wings, roast chicken and salads along with other CFA staples. It’s homage to the original resto opened by CFA founder S. Truett Cathy opened in Hapeville, GA, called the Dwarf Grill (later renamed the Dwarf House) which is still open today. Taste a bit of history, starting later this year in Nashville and Atlanta.

IHOP launches Flip’d

IHOP is launching it’s much-anticipated Flip’d fast-casual resto concept (read: grab-and-go) in New York City, Lawrence, Kansas; Columbus, Ohio; and Dublin, Ohio this summer. Its described as a convenient, quick-service concept designed to offer fast, made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner options in, “larger metropolitan areas, suburban areas, and non-traditional venues.”

The menu will include: Build-/top-your-own Pancake/Oatmeal/Yogurt bowls; Egg Combos, Egg Sandwiches; Burritos and Bowls; Ultimate Sandwiches (including tyhe Black Angus Steakburger, Buttermilk Crispy Chicken, or Grilled Chicken Breast); Grab-And-go Salads and Wraps; fresh baked goods; and more. Beverages will feature Fresh-squeezed Orange Juice and an array of Coffees including Nitro Cold Brew and Espressos.

Burger King opens Meat-Free resto…

In Germany, folks. (Meat lovers, relax!) Such has been the popularity of BK’s Impossible Burger-based sandwiches that BK Germany is popping up an all-plant-based locatioin (for a limited time only) in Cologne, Germany, from June 7 to 11. Don’t blink; you’ll miss it. The resto will feature the latest in BK’s plant-based line: a Long Chicken Patty. This vegan ‘chicken’ patty is topped with vegan mayo and iceberg lettuce. The stunt is being launched in cooperation with The Vegetarian Butcher, which created attention getters such as the plant-based Whopper and vegan ‘chicken’ nuggets in the past.

Summer time, and the Chex snakin’ is easy

Chex, the cereal-cum-snacks company, is offering a new White Cheddar snack mix for summer. It’s a crunchy blend of cheeze cereal, pretzels, rye chips, and crackers all imbued with White Cheddar Cheese flavour. If that turns your crank, start counting the days until mid-June, when the stuff becomes available continent-wide.

Fritos brings back BBQ

Fritos is bringing back its iconic Bar-B-Q flavoured Corn Chips for the summer for another go-round. The flavour was discontinued in 2018, then reprised as a Dollar-General exclusive last summer. This year it’s available from all the usual sources. They’re available now with no specific cut-off date mentioned – though we assume they’ll disappear soon after Labour Day.

Novelty Alert! Popcorn in ‘cement bags’?

Weep no more for the empty popcorn tub or bag that didn’t last through the whole movie. A South Korean cinema is offering – for a limited time only, of course – 50 lb. / 22 kg cement bags full of popcorn. Seriously. And the bags haven’t been be used for cement previously. (A little joke; very little).

Costing the equivalent of (US)$8.99, which is about what a tub of popcorn costs at most North American cinemas, the bags seem perfectly suited to popcorn transportation. They feature double-walled, heavy paper construction, which should keep the corn warm to the bottom of the bag and keep the ‘butter’ from soaking through to your hands and lap. Only in S. Korea – for now?

And that’s the skinny…

… On what’s going to be making some of us fatter over the coming days, weeks and months… See you back here in 7 for the next edition of Fast Food Week!
