A Father’s Day Compendium Of Meal Ideas, Memoirs…

If all you can think of to feed Dad today is a big, juicy Steak, that’s okay. I don’t know a non-Vegetarian/Vegan Dad who wouldn’t appreciate his (adult) kids taking over the grill duties just this once. And serve him his favourite cold Beverage while he waits, watching the final round of The U.S. Open…

then that’s what you should give him!

If Dad’s a golfer, he’ll already have regaled you with The Story Up To Now on the 2019 U.S. Open tournament, taking place at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Club in Carmel, California. Over three rounds, during  which the lead has swapped owners several times, the unpredictable tour stop has been eating up the hopes of veteran pros and previous tourney winners with unattainable fairways and unreadable greens. Or maybe Dad is planning to be out on the local links himself this afternoon… But one thing is certain: He’ll be ready for a great meal when the it’s all over.

A little history…

One year, for Father’s Day, I researched the history of the observance. Apparently, it was first conceived by a Spokane, WA, woman who felt that, if Mom was going to have a special Day in May, Dad should have his, too, in June. And it snowballed from there until President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation 1966 making it official.

Keep it simple…

In a past post in this space, I related the tale of how I, as a grown-up daughter, finally got my Dad’s Father’s Day supper menu wish right. I kept it simple – after asking him what he’d really like to eat!

But the overriding rule remains valid, I believe, for any Dad. Just give him his fave Grilled Treat off the ‘cue, with his fave style of Potato – Baked has always reigned supreme, in my family in this role – and a side of his choosing. For my Dad, that always meant anything but Carrots; Corn on the Cob with lots of Butter, for preference.

If you’re about to send Dad out to the golf course, brunch him with something substantial, such as a full-on Outdoors Man’s Breakfast of Bacon, Ham or Sausage; Eggs His Way; Wholegrain Toast and his favourite Jam or Jelly. Or do Pancakes or Waffles with a Breakfast Meat on the side. Whatever you decide on, make sure he also gets a small Fruit Salad and/or a glass of fresh-squeezed Juice along with it. And lots of Coffee.

Even if your Dad has gone to his reward…

…You can fête his memory, today. My birth Dad passed in 1999, and my step Dad followed in 2009. So, on Father’s Day, Mom and I mark the date with an afternoon of watching whatever golf tournament may be on the calendar. Then we have something he would have enjoyed for supper. And, just before bedtime, we break out the Glayva (a Scottish Liqueur made form Scotch and Honey) and toast all our Dads, and their Dads, back infinitum.
