What a week on the Fast Food Beat! Just about Everybody among the QSR chain resto leaders except McDonald’s had summer menu announcements, Subway announced a crossover with King’s Hawaiian, and Taco Bell made good on a promise to give away free Tacos if either NBA finalist won an away game…
Taco Bell makes good on NBA Finals offer…
The Bell promised to give away free Doritos Locos Tacos (see photo, above) – one per person – to anyone who comes into any of their stores between 2 pm and 6 pm on June 18. The deal was, The Bell would shell out free Tacos to all comers if either team stole an away game during the NBA finals. The Golden State Warriors won their game in Toronto on June 2. You’ll also be able to get a free Taco all day June 18 – if you order it through either the phone app or website.
…Brings back Nacho Fries
The Bell introduced Nacho Fries (see photo, top of page) a couple of years ago and they’ve been back for limited time gigs several times since them. This is the second time this year, in fact. This time, spicy Nacho Fries are available à la carte with Nacho Cheese Sauce for dipping, or in enhanced versions including Nacho Fries Supreme and Bel Grande, two sizes of the dish smothered in the Bell’s signature Seasoned Beef, Tomatoes, and Sour Cream. You can also add them to any other menu item. And there’s a special box deal which includes Nacho Fries, a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, a Doritos Locos Taco and a medium drink.
Wendy’s reprises Berry Burst Chicken Salad
Wendy’s is making another nod to summer, bringing back its Berry Burst Chicken Salad. It starts with a bed of Spring Mix Greens plus Romain and Iceberg Lettuce and adds Strawberries, Blueberries, crumbled Feta Cheese, slices of Grilled Chicken Breast, and Toasted Almonds. The Dressing is Marzetti Simply Dressed Raspberry Vinaigrette, provided in a pouch on the side.
Burger King brings back Mozz Sticks
BK is bringing back its popular breaded, deep fried Mozzarella Sticks for a limited time this summer. Generous-sized Mozzarella Cheese sticks get coated with an an Italian Seasoned Breading and Deep fries until gooey inside. An order includes 4 sticks plus Marinara Sauce for dipping. At all BK locations.
Arby’s new Meal Deals at participating stores
The guys who are so proud that they they’ve ‘Got The Meats!’ are offering a trio of new $5 Meal Deals for a limited time. You can get either a Classic Roast Beef, Classic Beef n’ Cheddar, or Crispy Chicken Sandwich with a Small order of Fries and your choice of a small fountain beverage.
Subway tests King’s Hawaiian Rolls
Seems all the fast Food Joints are getting on the King’s Hawaiian Bread bandwagon this summer. Now Subway has jumped in with a test of fresh-baked-in-store King’s Hawaiian Sub Rolls. The new Rolls will be 8 in. / 20 cm. long rather than the usual 12 in. / 30 cm, and will be used whenever you order any Subway Sandwich ‘Aloha Style’. That means a ‘Deluxe portion’ of Meat and twice the Cheese of a regular 6 in. / 15 cm sandwich. Am I just being cynical, or do I smell another of Subway’s well-known, despised product downsizing moves in the wind? How long will the classic Footlong Subway Sub last if the new 8 in. length is a hit? Anything to save money and pad the profits… The King’s Hawaiian test market runs from June 27 through September 4 at participating locations in Champagne, IL, Reno, NV, and Richmond, VA.
Little Caesar’s plays with Crusts…
LCs is testing an interesting looking option: a Pie with different Crust Flavours for each quarter. The Quattro Crust Pizza includes: Cheddar and Jalapeno, Cheddar and Bacon, Asiago and Parmesan, and Asiago and Parmesan Breadcrumbs quarters. It appears the regular round Large Crust is sprinkled with Parmesan on one half and Asigo on the other and the respective quarters are dressed with either Jalapeño rounds, Bacon pieces, Parmesan, or Parmesan Breadcrumbs. You also get your choice of any two from among: Butter Garlic, Cheezy Jalapeño, Buffalo Ranch, and Ranch Dipping Sauces. They’re usually an extra-cost option. Look for the Quattro at select Little Caesar’s locations in Virginia and Kentucky.
…Tests a new Fritos Pie
LC’s is also market testing its take on the classic Fritos Pie at selected locations in Johnson City and Kingsport, TN. It’s a Large Thin Crust Pizza topped with Chili Cheese Sauce, Taco Sauce, and Cheese, and is served with a bag of Chili Cheese Fritos on the Side. No word on how long this menu item will be around.
And that’s the skinny…
…On what’s gong to making some of us a little rounder in the days and weeks to com e. See you back here in 7 for the next edition of Fast Food Week!
