Fast Food Week! Quick Service Resto And Snacks News…

It’s been a big week in the snacks Sector, with announcements from Doritos, Lays and Reese’s. The St. Patrick’s Day specials are starting to appear. And McDonald’s is test marketing a new kind of Chicken Fillet Sandwich literally under the nose of Chicken-segment challenger Chick-Fil-A…

Next stop on the Special Occasion train: St. Patrick’s Day!

No sooner was Valentine’s Day over with than the Fast Food and Snacks purveyors began gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day…

Krispy Kreme is bringing back it’s traditional Green-glazed St. P’s Day regular Doughnuts – but for three days only, March 15 – 17.

Dairy Queen is featuring its Mint Oreo Blizzard as the Flavour of the Month.

More to come!

Cinnabon concentrates on Churos

Cinnabon is bringing back its popular Churro Swirls as a permanent menu item. You can get either of 2 new dipping sauces – Ghiradelli Chocolate or Smooth Caramel – starting at (US)0.50 each. There’s also a Churro Frosting Sandwich (pictured above), which sees two Churro Swirls stuffed with Cinnabon’s Cream Cheese Frosting. Sounds simply sumptuous… Disclaimer: I’m a Cream Cheese Frosting junkie…

McD’s tests ‘Mighty’ Chicken Sandwiches

McDonald’s is test marketing what it Calls ‘Mighty Chicken Sandwiches’ (pictured top of page) and ‘Mighty Chicken Tenders’ at participating McD’s outlets in the Augusta, GA, area. The Sandwich is a Crispy-fried Chicken Breast Fillet topped with two Pickle rounds and served on an Artizan Bun. Pretty spartan by McD’s standards. The up-grade Mighty Chicken Deluxe is topped with filet with Lettuce, Tomato and Mayo. Industry observers note that the Sandwich creation looks a lot like competitor Chick-Fil-A’s signature Sandwich. And they are testing it in Georgia, CFA’s home state… The Crispy-fried Mighty Tenders are available in the usual 4-, 6- and 10-piece order sizes.

Remember Asteroids? They’re baaack…

Ten years is a long time in the Snacks Universe. But that’s when Cheetos Asteroids were last marketed. Now, they’re back and they’re not alone. Frito-Lay is launching a new family of Salty treats under the Flavour Shots banner. They’re small packets of Salty treats – Doritos, Cheetos and Spiced Nuts – meant to deliver a big flavour blast when you do them like a shooter. They come in four varieties: Nacho Cheese Flavored Coated Nuts; Flamin’ Hot Nacho Cheese Flavored Coated Nuts; Fiery Habanero Triangles (Doritos); and Flamin’ Hot Asteroids (Cheetos). How long they’ll be around this time, F-L is not saying.

Lays lays three new ‘music inspired’ flavours on fans

Get ready for Wavy Electric Lime and Sea Salt, Flamin’ Hot Dill Pickle Remix and Kettle Cooked Classic Beer Cheese Potato Chips. There’s even a new signature theme track, remixed three ways (pop, hip hop and rock) to complement each of the ‘bold’ flavours. It’s all part of Lays’ ‘Turn Up The Flavour’ limited-time promotion.

Reese’s launches new ‘thin’ PB Cups. Why?

Could be that they’re catering to the Calorie-conscious. Or they just want to toss something ‘new’ into the Snacks fight ring. One reviewer notes that the Thins, available in Milk or Dark Chocolate, have a higher Chocolate-to-Peanut Butter ratio than regular Reese’s Cups. That’s to be expected since the PB layer is thinned out the most. At a mere o.39 oz. / 11 g, they’re about the same overall weight as a Mini Reese’s PB Cup. Available exclusively at Walmart until the end of this month; thereafter at all the usual locations.

And that’s the skinny…

…On what will be making some of us fatter over the next week or so. Back in  seven with another edition of Fast Food Week!
